Stars leap to Sergeant’s defence

The row following John Sergeant’s shock resignation from Strictly Come Dancing rumbles on today, with all manner of celebrities and politicians eager to shove their two-penn’orth into the debate in defence of the much-loved “dancing pig in Cuban heels”.
GMTV’s Andrew Castle, who was voted off the show a few weeks ago, made a speech in praise of the departed star almost worthy of the new American president. “He leaves the programme undefeated, his flag flying high,” he boomed. “The programme will be worse off for it because at end of the day it's an entertainment show and some people have failed in a spectacular fashion to see that.”
Other people leaping to John’s defence include pudgy-cheeked posho and Tory leader David Cameron, who proved he’s well and truly down with the proles by claiming to be “devastated” at the news, and fellow politician Peter Mandelson, who called him “the people’s John Travolta”.
Meanwhile, Mr Sergeant himself is set to draw a line under the sorry affair by heading off on an all-expenses-paid Caribbean cruise – but not before one last swansong on this weekend’s show. John and partner Kristina Rihanoff are rumoured to be performing a waltz to the Sophie Ellis-Bextor hit ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ – and ending the routine by firing imaginary bullets over the judges’ heads.
